Words

Words

My youngest son is still sleeping and my mind is going a mile a minute and so I thought I'd sit and type... (until my hands fall asleep...thanks cts!)

I've been thinking about words and how they can be used for good and/or evil. I prefer to use mine for good. I don't enjoy hurting others. I get no pleasure out of it. I feel that those who do, are quite insecure with themselves and that makes me sad and sorry for them.  That being said, I am still capable of being hurt by words. The old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me".... They may not create outward cuts, bruises and sores, but they surely create emotional ones. Ones that could possibly take longer to heal. When you start not trusting the person behind those words, it takes a LOT to gain that back.

Words and Kids

Hate. I hate the word hate. I actually try not to use it at all. If I do, it's mostly in jest. When my kids use it, I tell them hate is a powerful word and we see if we can come up with an alternate word. Example "I hate this kid Billy" . I ask why and usually it's "well he's just mean". I go about asking if he's done anything hurtful to them and usually he/she/they haven't really done anything. So instead of hating Billy I suggest we dislike his attitude and hopefully he can find peace one day. It may sound cheesy to some, but it's how I feel. I don't know Billy's home life. He could have it a terrible one and was never taught anything nice. I have no idea. He could have a great home life and is just genuinely mean to others. But since we don't know, I try and instill some other ways to think of Billy in to my kids lives. I don't know if it's working, only they can decide how they ultimately want to feel. If what they feel is true HATE, then I want to know why and how I can help. Hate is too powerful of an emotion in my eyes to just let slide. If my child came to me and said I don't like Billy so I just stay away from him. I may try to dig deeper just to see why and if he's done anything harmful, but they have made their decision and actions clear and for that I would be proud.

Stupid/Dumb

I refuse to call my kids demeaning names. Their actions can be called things, but my child won't ever (by me at least). If they make a mistake I will tell them I love them but they didn't make a good decision. If I see my child acting mean I tell them my children are to be kind to everyone (there are exclusions but when I'm saying that it's because they may be taunting one another with bad names and such) I refuse to raise mean kids. I know I don't have control of their feelings and actions, but I do know that how I treat them, what I call them and how I teach them to treat others will have an impact in their lives and ultimately how they treat others.  As a parent, we should be our kids biggest fans, advocates, encouragers and so-forth.  I have reasonable expectations for them meaning I don't expect them to be the best at everything (even though they may want to be), I don't expect straight As, but I expect good grades and if they're not getting them I will see why. Doesn't mean they're stupid or lazy. It could be they're just struggling. Kids have stress just like adults do. One is not more significant than the other. As adults we may THINK their stress is immature or not worth it, I assure it is. Learning how to cope at a young age helps us as adults. We were all kids once and there were things we found quite stressful that we may not now as adults.  There are also stressors that mirror ours as adults. Peer pressure, upcoming test/project/assignment, drugs, sex, alcohol, being accepted, speaking in public, personal appearance, weight, height, build, gender, love, lust, bullies. Those are all things both children and adults have to deal with. So I communicate with my kids. It helps having such an open conversation. I cannot complain how my parents raised me, but I didn't feel comfortable talking about certain things. I do believe it's mostly generational and I am more aware of that need so I make the effort with my kids. I truly believe my parents raised me the absolute best they possibly could and I cannot ask for more than that. I was and still am loved by both of them and I will never question that and will always be grateful to have them as my parents. Heck, they created an amazing a group of amazing people!!!

Words in relationships

It's taken me 20 years and a divorce to learn how to communicate in a relationship and I'm still struggling every single day. I'm sure there are a zillion relationship books out there, but none are written specifically for me and my partner. I have to write my own and I mean that figuratively ...though, by how much I share it could literally happen one day.

Calling your partner (boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse) names in anger is incredibly hurtful. I know in the past, when angry, I have said so many things just because I knew it would hurt the other person. I vow to no longer do that. In fact, I am pretty sure I have never done that to Steve. I am very cautious about it. It doesn't mean those words and phrases pop up in my head on occasion, I just push them away and think of another way to get a point across or to communicate my frustration. There are many demeaning words that can be said to one another. One in particular I cannot stand. I won't even write it, but it starts with a "C". I think by calling a woman that, it's basically saying she's worthless. She has no worth which means she should probably just die because she's sucking out any positivity this world has to offer.  I find that quite rare in a person (man or woman). I truly do not know a more hateful word out there. Believe it or not, I have been called that word by a couple different people when in a drunken stupor. I don't think being drunk is an excuse. It's because they knew that word was one that I cannot stand, is why it it was used. I will happily say that one of those men was court ordered out of my life and I hope to never see him again. However, if anyone sees me running away from a crazy man in a wheelchair, it's him. I don't have anything nice to say, so I won't say anymore about him.

Back to shutting your partner down with demeaning words and phrases. If your fight has come to that, then I believe the relationship needs a good long look. When someone is in a committed and loving relationship, those words should never be uttered. I am not going to get into extreme situations like cheating, rape, and horrible situations like that. I'm talking about a stupid fights about money, time management, disrespectfulness, jealously, priorities, double standards, lying,  inebriation, and other poor choices the other person may have done in ones eyes. I am sure some people won't agree with me, and that's up to them to decide. If that person is my partner then I know I cannot dictate how that person responds in an argument, but I can choose my own words and actions. I can chose to forgive such words, but my full trust won't come back for some time...if at all.  I do believe verbal abuse exists and can be just as detrimental to a relationship as physical abuse if not stopped. My mom always told me to leave immediately if a man ever hits me. Thankfully, one never has. As I said, I am willing to forgive those who have verbally struck me if the person is sincere about apologizing and works on themselves and the part of them that feels the need to fling hatred towards someone they claim to love.  Per the dictionary "Verbal abuse is the excessive use of language to undermine someone's dignity and security through insults or humiliation, in a sudden or repeated manner." also known as bullying, berating, insulting. It's using words as weapons to hurt someone else. Why does anyone wish to hurt someone they love in that manner? When the need to hurt is there, so is the lack of respect for that person and I do believe lack of true love. The word love has been used poorly by people who claim to love yet continuously hurt those they claim to. It contradicts the word and shows a lack of love. I don't want to be in a relationship where my love is not reciprocated. I wouldn't think anyone else would too.

Please use your words for good whenever possible.

10 months going on 2

Ryan is 10 months old! He's so busy and so much fun.  He can crawl super fast and has taken his first steps. He still isn't walking more than 4 steps and prefers crawling but he's on his way. He also claps for real now. He used to just shake his arms up and down but a few days ago he started clapping. He also waves...though it's usually delayed.  He's starting something that's totally darling...it's called banging on closed doors screaming for the person inside. Yah...really sweet. Ha.   He also loves to spit out all his food after it's been chewed. It's quite lovely. ;)

We can't believe he'll be 1 year old in less than 2 months. So exciting. :)

Low Carb Lifestyle Week #3

I didn't weigh myself at all the 2nd week of going low carb.  Valentine's weekend I didn't count carbs or worry what I put into my mouth.  It was nice to forget for a bit.  Well...I didn't forget, I was giving myself a small break to enjoy my valentine's treats.  This week I was back on schedule and I weighed myself this morning.  The scale showed I had lost a total of 10 lbs since I started.  My scale isn't the best and doesn't read super accurately but its good enough for now.

Low Carb Lifestyle Day #7

Well it's been a week of being on a LCHF diet and I'm feeling good. I've lost 4 lbs and 2 inches off my waist. (granted the first week or so is just water weight) I like seeing the progress.   After a few days I felt really sick and irritable. My muscles ached and I felt horrible. Every day after that it went down a notch and today I haven't felt it at all. I've found new ways to enjoy foods that I had to give up and I have more to come. I've yet to make the "oopsie bread" but am looking forward to how that goes.  I miss chocolate but there's a chocolate mousse I'm dying to make. Just have to get to the store to get my ingredients.   I have found that low carb ice cream is good as well.   I tried spaghetti squash instead of spaghetti noodles last night and I have to say it was a hit. I don't really feel like I'm "Missing out" or having to give up a lot. I still get to eat more than enough delicious food.

Low carb lifestyle day #6

Feeling a whole lot better today.  At least so far.  Drinking plenty of water and I was happy with 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast.  My scale made me smile too.  I lost another 1.5 lbs! That's 4 lbs so far.  Now before anyone gets worried about me losing too much too fast, this is pretty much just water weight.

Low carb flu? What the wha?!

I don't believe I've ever posted 3 blog entries in a single day but as this day has progressed I've been feeling ickier and ickier.  I felt good for about an hour after lunch but then I felt the yuck again.  Off to research.  What I found is I have the low carb flu.  Also called, carb flu, keto flu, induction flu, carb crash...and some others.

Pretty much my body isn't used to not having all these extra carbs and has to work to do a switch-a-roo on how it works.  Carb flu can make people irritable (✔ check), nauseous (✔ check),  tired (✔ check), achy muscles 💪 (✔ check)  and an overwhelming feeling of not feeling 'right'  (✔✔ check check) . . The carb flu can last from a day to 2 weeks.  I'm praying for something on the shorter end.  🔚

Ways to help elevate some of the symptoms is drinking plenty of water, drinking chicken broth or something with high sodium., make sure you get enough fat and electrolytes.  Not everyone will experience this 'fun' early side effect of a low carb diet, but if you do...it sucks.  I'm gonna push through...but I feel like poop 💩.

Bbq chips sound so good right now.  Or chips and salsa.  *sigh*

Low carb revelation #1

I love eating. I love food.  I am loving this low carb lifestyle.  Once I figure out what I'm going to eat, I'm genuinely excited because it's something delicious.  I am not watching my calories because cutting carbs does that automatically for me. I don't have to limit my coffee, and my creamer consists of heavy whipping cream which is carb-free.  Makes for delicious coffee BTW!  I don't have to give up peanut butter either and even found a delicious dessert=  Carb Smart Bryers vanilla ice cream with melted peanut butter on top.  *drool*

Low carb lifestyle day #5

So it's day 5 eating below 50 grams of carbs per day and I feel unusually run down.  My muscles ache and I just want to sleep.  I read that's common in the beginning.  Here's to a better tomorrow.

Low carb lifestyle day #4

Looks like I've lost a couple pounds so far, but I also don't have a good working scale.  That'll  be an upcoming purchase for sure. I do notice I don't feel like I'm starving.  I'm also sleeping a whole lot better.  I have noticed an increase in my energy.  It hasn't been hard to avoid carbs.  Staying below 50 grams still. So far, counting carbs is a whole lot easier than counting calories.

If I feel like snacking, I can munch on mixed nuts which fulfills my eating desire.  Still feeling confident in my decision.  I want to thank my cousins wife, Elizabeth, for mentioning it.  I also want to thank my sister, Tricia, for letting me fill her inbox with lchf messages since she's been doing this for quite some time now.

Low carb lifestyle day #3

Today is day #3 of my low carb lifestyle.  I have yet to feel real urges for sugar, breads and pastas.  So far, I haven't seen any negative or positive effects. I've keeping my carb intake below 50 grams a day so far.  I know some days I'll probably exceed that. According to research, intake of 50 and below grams of carbs will maximize my weight loss and health.

So far it's been easy though I've yet had to make dinner for the family and myself.  The family is not on a low carb diet, so I will have to figure some things out.

And then it was 2015...

Happy 2015! It has been a few months since I've posted. Ryan is now almost 10 months old. He's 23 lbs, speed crawling and bringing so much joy into our lives. He eats everything but baby food. We just feed him what we have for dinner and all is well.  It's actually easier that way.   His sleeping is sporadic and has been ending up in bed with us in the middle of the night. We're so tired that we just let him. I really don't mind since my other kids don't still sleep with us so I know it won't be forever.

Steve is a wonderful daddy and still amazes me daily when I see how much he loves us all.  Life is how we make it and we're doing our best to make the best of our life.  Each and every day is a gift to us and I feel immensely blessed to be here.

My children are my light. I am loving growing closer to each and every one of them every day. Sarah is now an adult, but will be forever my baby. Allison is so grown up and I love seeing how alike we are and also our differences. Tyler is still my sweet and kind baby boy who cares so much for people and animals alike. Ryan is my rambunctious baby who lights up my life from sun up to sun down and often in the middle of the night. haha.

Our family recently obtained a young rescue pup. Steve wanted a dog to grow up with Ryan and we found the perfect one.  Chase is a Malamute, Siberian Husky, German Shepherd Mix. or a Geberian Shepsky. Yes, we now have a designer dog (eye roll) He's so cute and looks like a baby bear.   He's only like 9 weeks old so far and has a lot of training to go but he's such a good doggy for our family.  We rescued him from the Rocking M Ranch in Southern California and picked him up in Temecula, CA . He was one of 9 pups in a high kill shelter and the Rocking M Ranch was able to rescue 5 of them. We were blessed to find Chase.

Looking at myself. I am currently 10 months postpartum. I am at a weight and state of mind in which I never thought I'd be. I initially lost the baby weight but it didn't stay off long. I blinked at it was back on and then some.   Having knowingly had PCOS for the past 9 years, I am well aware of it's symptoms. They have come back with a vengeance.   I first recognized my weight gain primarily around my abdomen since my legs and upper body don't ever seem to change much. Along with that was an increase to my anxiety. I have always suffered from social anxiety but it seems to have begun to worsen.  Next I noticed hirsutism. I HATE even thinking about it but it just started getting bad. Then came the acne, missed periods and sharp pains that feel like ruptured cysts. I have had them before, so I'm well aware of the feeling.   I have an appointment with my OB/GYN today to discuss options.  I want to change my birth control and go back on Metformin.  Metformin worked wonders for me before and when I changed insurance and doctors I just didn't continue with it. I'm hoping my Dr will agree to this.

Along with medicinal changes I have decided to lower my carb intake. Today is day one. I will not post daily posts on social media as whenever I have tried that in the past it just doesn't work for me. I will do this for me and not for public/friend support and the comments and suggestions. I think the well meaning suggestions are what bother me the most. I know people mean well, but I want to do this my way. I have private messaged a couple of people who I know can offer me help and advice but, so far that will be it.   Knowing it's in my genetics and diabetes runs in my family, I believe that a LOW CARB lifestyle is what will work best for MY BODY based on my family history.

I wish everyone happiness and laughter! :)

***update.  I went to my Obstetrician and he was very well educated in PCOS and let me try a new birth control and let me go back on Metformin and was happy to do both.

Half a year old baby boy!

Wow, it's been a fun 6 months with Ryan. It's been a blast getting to know him. I just pray the next 6 months are just as great!

The very same day Ryan turned 6 months old, he had one of the crankiest sad days of his short life. He pretty much cried all day long. Nothing would soothe him. Daddy came home and took over because I was exhausted. Ryan still cried...more like screamed until late that night. I took back over after a while and bounced him to sleep and he slept well and the next day he was perfectly happy.  We like to think he was upset that he was getting older but he's now accepted it.

Look at him go!

Ryan can roll over like a champ and that's how he gets most places he wants to go.  I will need to start baby proofing.

He just started scooting forward using his tippy toes to push him.

He cut his two bottom teeth in the last month and that was very drooly and sad at the same time. He's now pleased as punch with his pearly whites and likes to bite anything that gets near his mouth.

Jumping in his jumparoo is the best thing ever! He has the strongest legs of anyone in the house and he jumps and jumps and jumps.  Once he started jumping he lost all interesting in the baby swing. :( We are quite sad because that was our go-to when he got cranky and tired. Now he just cries and screams to be held. We have tried the cry it out and 90% of the time it does NOT work. The past couple days the only thing that gets him to sleep is one of us bouncing him on our knee until he passes out. He also falls asleep in his jumper but I just don't feel good leaving him there for a nap...especially since his legs don't know it's time to stop jumping even though he's asleep.

Eating

We've starting feeding him a little at a time. If we go out we try fruits and veggies from our plates. So far he's had tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, pickles (He LOVES pickles), green beans, rice and beans.   I've blended up extra from our dinner to feed him and he's happy with that. We have decided to just give him what we have instead of buying baby food from jars. He seems to be doing quite well with that and the doctor has no problems with it either.

Singing

Ryan loves to hear himself (sing?) I'm not sure what it is...but it's a high pitched noise and we mimic him and he things its' funny. He also like to talk and tell us about his day. He definitely doesn't talk as much as his big sister, Allison, did but he talks more than his big brother, Tyler did. He's definitly his own person much like his daddy is. We love him to pieces.

Rewind and be kind. Educate instead of Hate.

I have a new movement to share with you all. My politicalish post is directed towards anyone who think it's directed towards and even those who don't. :)

I've always been motivated by those who call me names. The worse names I'm called the better I perform. And if I don't agree with you, just start calling me ignorant, stupid, lame, dumb...and so on...I'm even more motivated to change my mind just so you stop calling me those names.

NOT. Um...wait...rewind.

Have you ever thought that:

Positively sharing knowledge has better reception than doing so negatively? You may think it's just the opposite because it seems a like only the negative is shared. It riles up everyone's emotions and brings forth anger and hatred...but nothing changes. Nobody's minds are changed. I repeat, nobody.  We want people to change. We all think our ideas and beliefs are the correct ones and society and the world would be a better place if everyone voted left, or right, up or down, black or white...and so on.  Very rarely do I see any side that kindly shares their ideas and ideals in a positive way. A way that doesn't sling hateful words to the people that don't share the same. If we want change and people don't change if they are called unkind words, then why are we continuing to do just that?

Tell someone they're doing a good job and they will work harder. Tell them how much they suck and watch their work circle the drain.   Encourage instead of bring down.  I'm not saying everyone deserves a trophy, as I do think competition is necessary - but I feel we are going about it the wrong way.

Let's rewind.....and be kind.

Instead of spewing hate....educate. Sharing your views and beliefs in a kind and positive way will diminish the need to have others put up their defensive barrier and maybe...just maybe...you will have the ability to penetrate their mind and slowly change the world for the better.

My thoughts for the day

Kiddos and stuff

School has started again! Yay! Well...not so much. I may be one of the few parents I know that enjoy having their children around every day. If I knew I could do it better than their school, I'd home-school my kids. That being said, I don't think I can do it better so off to school they go!

Sarah is a SENIOR in high school! I can't believe it. I'm so proud of her. She has a full time job and it amazing at it. Always a smile on her face and I actually see her more! I can't wait to see what her future holds. :)

Allison is now in the 8th grade. Middle school kinda sucks because they go from being the bottom class (7th grade) to the top of the class (8th grade) and next year they are at the bottom as Freshman in high school. So confusing for them.  My daughter does well though and I'm super proud of her.

Tyler is still my soft spoken sweet boy and is now in the 5th grade. He has the same teacher his dad had as well as Allison had in the 5th grade. I'm happy about that because I enjoyed her as Allison's teacher. My kids have been blessed with amazing teachers.  Tyler is also in traveling soccer this year and is doing quite well.

Ryan will be 5 months in 6 more days! Time is flying and I love seeing him grow and become a little person. He has a fun personality and I love his sweet smile. Everyone says he looks like Tyler, but I see him looking more like his daddy every day.

Steve and I love our little family and life together in our small town. Anticipating the future and see what our life will hold for us.

Blessings to all.

Depression is real

Always after a death, whether it be someone close like a family or friend, or someone famous that even though we didn't know them they some how touched us - Social media is always filled with closeness. Most of the comments are about sadness or favorite memories. A few scattered heartless people are out there, but gladly most of them are good filled memories. When someone dies by their own hand, my heart breaks for what they must have gone through to get to that point.

Depression is real.

I have suffered depression for many years. A decade or more at least. I believe that everyone suffers this terrible "whateverthisis" different than others. I also believe that we all cannot be treated the same way. Thankfully, I have not been to the point where I want to end my own life. I cannot know what those people are thinking and what they're going through. I do know that we all have our own secrets and things we've been through and no matter how much we share, we never share it all. There will always be something inside that we keep for just ourselves.  We can NEVER know everything about someone else.  I do know it is not what we want. Nobody wants to feel depressed. It's a terrible way to feel. It's...well...depressing.

Depression cannot be snapped out of.

People can look happy and act happy and actually feel happy sometimes and still suffer from depression. I have many good days, good moments, good hours. Photos of me looking happy and laughing, I am happy and laughing in that moment. It can change. I know it will change...I just don't know when.  I could have all the money in the world, but that doesn't beat depression. I am not sure what it will take, I just know that it's real and misunderstood.

Depression doesn't equal "emo"

I am a very sensitive and emotional person. I cry at almost every movie.  I also think many appropriateness things are hysterically funny. I love to drink beer and sometimes I drink too much. I pray and believe in God. I try to love everyone regardless of what they believe. I am many things and my depression doesn't define me. It doesn't fit into any one type of person. It goes after every type of person.

How to "deal" with someone who suffers from depression

Love them. Let them know you care. Give them space and know they still care about you but may not be able to show it. Don't judge them. Think hard before you hand out advice. Let them know they're not alone and that you WANT to hear what they have to say. You WANT to be apart of their lives even if they think their life isn't worth living.  The hardest part, for me at least, is feeling as though I'm whining or talking about things someone else doesn't want to hear or want to understand. I don't want to be a burden and I don't want people judging me.  This doesn't mean you need to give up on your own life and take on the pain of your friend or loved one.  There's a time and place for everything.  You don't have to fully understand what someone is going through to love them. Love them anyway.

Why do I share

I ask myself why I feel the need to share so much about my life. I often wonder why does anyone feel the need to do anything? Why do artists, create? Why do authors, write? Why do athletes do athletic stuff. Why do couch potatoes sit on couches and eat potatoes?  It's just something in us that has the passion to do it, so we do.   I love writing, but don't have the patience to write a book. I've tried, I get bored with it. But I like writing and this is how I can do it. Social Media makes it quite simple to share thoughts and events with hundreds, if not thousands, of people at a time.

In the end. I share because I want to and because I can.
